Coronavirus: babies vaccinated in pregnancy have antibodies after birth

A recent study, published in the prestigious international scientific journal JAMA, found that vaccination during pregnancy results in the continued presence of antibodies in babies compared to those born to unvaccinated mothers infected with COVID-19.

The study, conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA, included 77 women who were vaccinated with two doses of the mRNA vaccine and 12 women who had symptomatic coronavirus infection between weeks 20 and 32. of pregnancy.

Blood samples were collected 2 months after birth from 49 vaccinated children and 6 months after birth from 28 vaccinated children and 12 children of infected mothers. Of course, the vaccinated mothers had significantly higher antibody titers at birth compared to the infected mothers. But what about the babies?

Babies 2 months

Among infants of mothers vaccinated at 2 months, 98% had detectable antibodies. In fact, their concentrations were correlated with those of the mother and the umbilical cord.

Infants 6 months

At 6 months, 57% of babies born to vaccinated mothers had detectable antibodies compared to only 8% of babies born to infected mothers.

dr thanos paraschos, Gynecologist – Obstetrician, Fertility Specialist, Endoscopic Surgeon, Director of the EmBIO Assisted Reproduction Center, Commenting on the results of the investigation, he affirms that pregnant women are a population at greater risk due to the changes that occur during pregnancy, both in immunity and in the respiratory system, for which reason their vaccination is recommended. And if we take into account that vaccines for infants have not yet been developed, pregnant women must understand that their vaccination is necessary. Given the delay in the development of vaccines for infants, the vaccine serves not only for your own safety, but also to strengthen your babies’ defenses against COVID-19.
