Degree vs. Passport: How to Fix Name Mismatches for Saudi Visa Approval

It’s a stressful situation, especially when your medical and visa processing are already underway. The mismatch between an academic degree and legal identification (Passport/NIC) is one of the most common reasons for Saudi Cultural Mission (SACM) or Mosadaqa rejections.

Degree vs. Passport: How to Fix Name Mismatches for Saudi Visa Approval

You’ve done the hard work, secured a job in Saudi Arabia, and passed your medical. Then comes the notification everyone dreads: Rejection. The reason? Your degree has a single name (e.g., "Arjun"), but your Passport and ID include a surname (e.g., "Arjun Sharma").

In the eyes of Saudi authorities, if the names don't match exactly, they cannot verify that the degree belongs to the passport holder. If you are stuck in this "Surname Loop," here is the step-by-step roadmap to fixing it.

The Big Question: Change the Degree or the ID?

When your degree and ID card don’t match, you have two choices. However, experience shows that changing your legal ID (NIC and Passport) to match your degree is almost always faster and easier than trying to get a university to reissue a degree.

1. Updating your National ID (NIC)

Your local identity authority is your first stop. Since your degree is your "base" document for the visa, your ID must reflect the name exactly as it appears on your certificate.

  • Minor Changes: If you are just removing a surname to match a single-name degree, this is considered a "modification."

  • Urgent Processing: Do not use the normal delivery. Pay the Urgent or Executive fee.

  • Timeline: With Executive processing, you can often receive your updated ID in 2 to 3 days.

  • The Father's Name Factor: As many in the community have noted, if the error involves your father’s name, he may need to update his ID first before yours can be modified.

2. Updating your Passport

You cannot update your Passport until you have the new physical ID card in your hand.

  • Service Type: Choose Fast Track or Express Service.

  • Timeline: Express passports are usually issued within 2 to 4 working days.

  • Total Timeline: From ID modification to holding a new Passport, you are looking at approximately 7 to 10 working days if you use all "Urgent" services.

Why the "Surname Issue" Happens

In many regions, it is common to use a single name on school and university records. However, international travel standards (ICAO) prefer a "Given Name" and a "Surname."

Pro Tip: If your degree has only one name, when you update your Passport, the "Surname" field might be left blank or filled with a placeholder. Ensure you consult with a specialized visa agent to see how the Saudi Cultural Mission in your specific region prefers single-name entries.

Dealing with the "Visa Medical" Deadline

If you have already completed your medical, you are likely on a 90-day clock.

  • Don't Panic: 10 to 14 days of document correction will generally not expire your medical.

  • Transparency: If you have an employer waiting, inform them that you are doing a "document correction for attestation." Most Saudi employers are very familiar with this delay and will wait as long as they see you are taking active steps.

Final Checklist for Re-submission:

  1. New ID Card (Matches Degree Name)

  2. New Passport (Matches Degree Name)

  3. Affidavit: In some cases, a "Same Person Affidavit" (notarized) can help, but it is not a substitute for matching ID documents.

  4. Re-submit to Mosadaqa/SACM: Once the names match perfectly, your second attempt at attestation is much more likely to sail through
