The intentions of SMIC and the municipality of Shenzhen to create a joint venture are reported by Bloomberg with reference to the official application submitted by the future participants. The share of SMIC in the capital of the new enterprise will reach 55%, another 23% will go to a structure controlled by the municipality of Shenzhen, and the remaining funds will be raised on the open market. It is expected that the enterprise will begin production in 2022 using a 28-nm process technology and more rough ones, and after reaching the design capacity it will be able to process 40 thousand silicon wafers of 300 mm size a month.
In general, the Chinese industry uses 200mm silicon wafers, and not many manufacturers work with 300mm wafers. SMIC has four factories in China. Zhou Zixue, chairman of the board, at the SEMICON China event in China, urged overseas companies to work more closely with Chinese companies to overcome the shortage of semiconductor components. According to him, last year, the Chinese industry showed revenue growth of 17.8% in a difficult environment, this year the growth rate should remain high, as expects by the leadership of SMIC.
