Chile took air in the Qualifiers

Martín Lasarte's team added their first three points since the Reinaldo Rueda era ended.

Chile defeated Paraguay 2-0 on Sunday in Santiago for the fifth date of the South American qualifier for the Qatar-2022 World Cup, a triumph that gives oxygen to La Roja and that complicates the aspirations of the Guarani.

Chile's victory was built with goals from striker Ben Brereton in the 69th minute and full-back Mauricio Isla in the 72nd, in a very tight match in which local midfielder Charles Aránguiz was sent off at 74.

La Roja is reunited with the triumph in the World Cup after seven games without winning thanks to a presentation full of shame and anger, but that gives hope to dream of Qatar since it adds 10 units that leaves it in eighth place.

"There are things that hurt us a lot, we know that the tie is difficult, we have had very bad games but the golden generation is not going to give up," Isla said after the victory.

Meanwhile, the defeat complicates Paraguay's options since it remains outside the classification zone with 12 units and also lost a man due to the expulsion of Omar Alderete.

On the following date, next Thursday, Chile will host Venezuela while Paraguay will visit Bolivia.

The game heated up even more when an alleged projectile that came out of the stands would have hit the back of Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almirón when he was about to take a corner kick, provoking protests from players on both sides who were close to leaving for the hands.

Center-back Paulo Díaz came out with a groin injury and put more complications on the Chilean national team, while Paraguay played without complications and drew at halftime.

- The relief of the goal -

It seemed that history was repeating itself. Chile was once again left with nothing, but Alexis reappeared who joined Isla, his beloved partner on the right wing, who put in a cross and left only Brereton who with a strong shot opened the scoring, a relief for La Roja at 69 .

Three minutes later, again Alexis Sánchez looked for Isla to send him a long pass from the left and he, after taking his marker, hit an impossible shot for goalkeeper Silva, scoring the second local goal.

The emotions followed after an elbow from Charles Aránguiz on Angel Correa that earned him the red card, an action that once again heated up the game. Minutes later, the Paraguayan Alderete was also sent off for hitting Brereton, the last outstanding action of a hard-fought match.
