Britain: Russia's proposal for a ceasefire was a pretext to redeploy its forces

Britain says Russia’s proposal for a ceasefire in Mariupol was likely an attempt to evade international condemnation.

At the same time, Russia was giving itself the opportunity to redeploy its forces to launch a new attack.

“By accusing Ukraine of violating the agreement, Russia is likely attempting to deflect responsibility for current and future civilian casualties in the city,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

Earlier, Russia announced that it had opened humanitarian corridors near the besieged cities of Mariupol and Volnovacha. The Russian Defense Ministry has accused Ukrainian “nationalists” of preventing civilians from leaving. But the Mariupol city council said Russia was not respecting the ceasefire.
