Coronavirus: Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Evidence on Hospital Risk

Vaccine

New data on Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine.

The risk of hospitalization due to Covid-19 after vaccination with the single-dose vaccine is about five times higher than those vaccinated with the two-dose Pfizer/NioNTech vaccine, according to a large French study.

Data of those vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson

The researchers, who published the article in the American medical journal JAMA Network Open, according to Reuters, compared data from almost 700,000 people who were vaccinated with J&J and as many with Pfizer. The average age of the subjects was 66 years. The study included almost the entire population over 55 years of age who had received the single-dose vaccine in France.

It was found that in the period of approximately two months after vaccination in the group vaccinated with J&J there were 129 hospital admissions, while in the Pfizer group only 23 (that is, about a fifth). The researchers estimated that the Pfizer vaccine was 92% effective against the risk of hospitalization, while the J&J vaccine was 59% effective.

Scientists recommend booster dose with mRNA vaccine

The French scientists concluded that these findings support the recommendation to give a second booster dose of the mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) to those who had originally received the single-dose vaccine.

The researchers note that in initial studies, the J&J vaccine was 85.4% effective against severe Covid-19 and about 68% effective against the risk of hospitalization in the general population.
