Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett spoke by phone with French President Emmanuel Macron before leaving this morning for Moscow, the Elysee reported.
Macron briefed him on recent talks he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “They will stay in contact, with the aim of achieving a ceasefire, in coordination with German Chancellor Olaf Solz,” a French presidential official said.
Bennett’s three-hour meeting with Putin
In his three-hour meeting with Putin in the Kremlin, Bennett raised, among other things, the issue of the large war-affected Jewish community in Ukraine.
The two leaders also discussed ongoing talks between major powers, including Russia, on reviving the 2015 deal on Iran’s nuclear program. Israel opposes this development, while Russia today expressed the view that sanctions against it make it difficult to reach an agreement with Iran. However, the State Department argues that the sanctions against Russia are not related to the 2015 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (JPCOA) and should not affect a possible reactivation.
It should be noted that on his trip to Moscow Bennett was accompanied by the Minister of Housing Zeev Elkin, who was born in Ukraine. Elkin previously accompanied former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and acted as an interpreter for his talks with Putin.
Bennett’s next scheduled meeting in Berlin with Olaf Solz.
