Russia-Ukraine: Beijing favors direct negotiations

Beijing has called for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in a telephone conversation between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his US counterpart Anthony Blinken.

“We encourage direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “We hope the fighting will stop as soon as possible … and a major humanitarian crisis will be averted,” Wang said, acknowledging that negotiations will be difficult.

What Blinken said about the events in Ukraine

This was the first phone communication of the two ministers of February 24. Blinken told Wang that people “are watching which countries uphold the fundamental principles of freedom, self-determination and national sovereignty,” according to State Department spokesman Ned Price.
