Staikouras: Gas price will remain high all year - Government measures to be precise

The basic scenario is that the price of natural gas remains at the current level throughout the year, according to Christos Staikouras.

“We will continue to subsidize electricity and gas bills to the best of our ability, covering part of the increases. “Based on the estimates of 15 days ago, it seemed that gas prices would fall in the second quarter of the year,” stressed the Minister of Finance in OREN, noting that “today we are talking, the basic scenario is that the price of gas will remain at the level of these days throughout the year”.

Therefore, a much larger subsidy from the state budget will be required, which emphasizes that the data is constantly changing. Likewise, Mr. Staikouras stated that “the price of cereals is a big problem”. At the same time, he assured that households, businesses and farmers will continue to subsidize, while highlighting that from the reduction of ENFIA there is a relief of 350 million euros in the pockets of citizens.

The 6 meters on the “table” to face with precision

The Minister of Finance stated that there are six measures on the government table to deal with the energy crisis and the precision that affects the Greek economy and the daily lives of citizens:

• continuation of the subsidy for electricity and gas bills, covering part of the increases,
• improve the disposable income of the citizen,
• “Brave but also realistic”, as Mr. Staikouras described it, an increase in the minimum wage,
• actions aimed at vulnerable households, depending on the budget,
• Europe’s decisions in the coming weeks on the mechanism that will allow Member States to help households and businesses,
• exemption of defense expenses from tax rules

“These are all national policies, they will not cover the costs in the family budget. “No country will be able to do it alone, in the coming weeks the EU must take radical decisions to help households and businesses,” he said.
